THE ORCHID GARDEN

A special space for tributes to the most important women in our lives.
Mothers, grandmothers, nannies, teachers, friends – whoever they are, these are the women who inspire and guide us.
Also listed in The Orchid Garden are the women who have been honoured by organisations and publications in annual awards.

Tan Zi Xi

The Great Women Of Our Time Awards alumni
Illustrator, MESSYMSXI

The dress Zi Xi wore to accept her “Most Inspiring Woman” honour at the 2013 Great Women Of Our Time Awards gala dinner, was in itself, an expression of love and support. “I remember feeling lost over what I should wear to the gala dinner,” she says. “I confided in my aunt, who sewed a dress for me. Women like my aunt are the unsung heroes in our society, because they have given unconditionally to support others.”

Besides working on creative concepts for clients, Zi Xi teaches illustration and watercolour at schools and organisations too. This Central Saint Martins alumnus, who majored in illustration, continues to perk up Singapore’s art scene with her refreshing and fun depictions. Zi Xi draws inspiration from misadventures, “I’m intrigued by unusual experiences or even mishaps, sometimes my own. There is always something quirky in these incidents that forms the stories in my work. Being able to smile or laugh about an unfortunate incident really helps to make life a little lighter.”
