THE ORCHID GARDEN

A special space for tributes to the most important women in our lives.
Mothers, grandmothers, nannies, teachers, friends – whoever they are, these are the women who inspire and guide us.
Also listed in The Orchid Garden are the women who have been honoured by organisations and publications in annual awards.

Tan Yen Yen

The Great Women Of Our Time Awards alumni
Regional Vice President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific (South), SAS Institute

After 18 years at Hewlett Packard Singapore, where she spent five as managing director, Yen Yen joined Oracle Corporation. For more than three years, she was its senior vice president for Applications in Asia Pacific. Now, as Regional Vice President and Managing Director at Asia Pacific (South) at SAS Institute (a company which provides business analytics software solutions), she oversees everything from increasing revenue to improving client satisfaction. The 2009 Great Women Of Our Time Awards, “Most Inspiring Woman” award winner says, “The different companies have enriched and challenged me in different ways professionally, and I’m glad that I’ve made the career moves. At SAS, I direct teams of talented individuals across offices in southern Asia Pacific, so it is something I take a lot of pride in as a leader.” Yen Yen wants to contribute to the industry by mentoring younger techpreneurs. “Singapore has a vibrant environment of start-ups, which has attracted funding from venture capitalists from all over the world, to our shores,” says the mother-of-four. “And as opportunities open up for these start-ups, it will become increasingly important that there are tech veterans to advise and guide them.”

Away from the office, Yen Yen’s passion for endurance sports has intensified too. In 2011, she completed her first Half Ironman race, which comprised 1.5km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km half-marathon. Yen Yen has a lot on her plate, but the loving mother draws strength from her family. “It’s delightful to be always surprised by life’s little nuggets in the words and acts of my children,” she shares. “I’ve learnt so much from them while imparting parental advice.”
