Prof Ng was a research scientist at the Genome Institute of Singapore, A*Star, when she joined the inaugural Great Women Of Our Time Awards in 2005, under the Science & Technology category. “Winning the ‘Most Inspiring Woman’ award that year gave me a greater sense of responsibility as a scientist, no matter how small the contribution. It was a pleasant surprise, and an encouragement to keep my faith and stay convicted in what I do,” says Prof Ng, who landed a nomination for the Singapore Youth Award the following year.

After joining the Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) in 2007, she headed a research group to study the human immunity response to the chikungunya virus. The findings enabled doctors to identify early signs of infection in patients, diagnose symptoms accurately and contain the outbreak effectively. Studies by the group have been published in leading scientific journals. Now a principal investigator, Prof Ng not just initiates research projects, but also trains scientists, researchers and students. In 2013, she was even named A*Star’s Most Inspiring Mentor. Her other appointment is at the UK’s University of Liverpool, where she is professor and chairperson of Viral Immunology at the Institute of Infection and Global Health, where she teaches on topics like microbiology and infection diseases.

And she’s constantly striving to improve: “I want to become better in my research work, so that I can further help to combat infectious diseases both locally and globally.”
