With no prior experience in the business of construction, Gladys chose to take the path less trodden when she joined the family business after graduating from university. “My degree was not construction-related, so it was a challenge for me to understand technical terms, as well as work processes and sequences,” she reveals, “But I eventually grew to enjoy the business and saw it as my duty to carry it onwards and upwards.”

As director of business development at Teamsystem Construction Pte Ltd, Gladys spearheads the company’s growth by working closely with business associates, clients and vendors. Today, Teamsystem Construction’s building and renovation projects span from Marina Bay Sands to Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

Charity is also a priority for her company, shares the big-hearted Great Women Of Our Time Awards alumnus. “Since 2005, Teamsystem has helped various orphanages and homes in upgrading works. We feel that this is more practical than a cash donation – since these organisations would eventually require building services, our contributions can take the load off responsibilities in procurement to project management.”

And with the true mettle of a leader who walks the talk, Gladys says, “Pressure encourages one to develop swifter moves towards the successful and timely completion of tasks. One must experience hardship before learning to appreciate the easy times, like the Chinese proverb ‘xian ku hou tian’ (first bitter, then sweet). When the going gets tough, I will ask myself, how did others overcome these challenges? If they did, I would too.”
