An accountant by training, Euleen Goh made the headlines in 1999 when she became the first Singaporean to head Standard Chartered Bank’s (Stanchart) sales, corporate and institutional banking business. This was a global role calling for her to oversee the operations of one of the bank’s core businesses in more than 500 offices in some 50 countries.

Two years later, Euleen took over as the chief executive of Stanchart in Singapore,    becoming the British bank’s second Asian female chief executive.

As the head of Stanchart in Singapore from 2001 to 2006, Euleen was responsible for driving the bank’s corporate governance and strategic agenda. She attributes her steady climb up the corporate ladder at the bank in part to her readiness in her early years to take on overseas postings and global roles.

The firsts chalked up by Euleen extend beyond the bank. In 2006, she became the first woman to be appointed to the board of Singapore Airlines. And in early 2014, Royal Dutch Shell announced that it planned to add two women to its board of directors, one of them being Euleen. When she assumes the position in September 2014, she will become not just the first Singaporean but the first Asian to sit on the oil giant’s board.

In 2008, Euleen was appointed non-executive chairperson of the Singapore International Foundation (SIF), a not-for-profit organization that seeks to nurture active global citizens and forge friendships for a better world.

The list of Euleen’s other board directorships include IE Singapore, where she was the chairperson from 2005 to 2008. She has also served, or continues to serve, on the boards of Singapore Exchange Limited, Aviva plc, DBS Group Holdings Ltd and DBS Bank Ltd, SATS Ltd and CapitaLand Ltd.

She is also member of the Management Advisory Board of NUS Business School, and trustee to the Singapore Institute of International Affairs. She serves on the Board of her alma mater, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, and is Chairman of the Board of Governors of NorthLight School.

Born in 1955 in Singapore, Euleen studied at the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) where she was a Girl Guide and captain of the school netball team. She completed her “A” Levels at Raffles Institution where she captained the volleyball team. She went on to become a chartered accountant with professional qualifications in banking and taxation.

Euleen was appointed Justice of the Peace on 8 May 2013. She was awarded a Public Service Medal in 2006 and a Public Service Star in 2012.

Euleen was Her World magazine’s “Woman of the Year” in 2005.
